2005 has already seen a lot, and I mean A LOT of good releases so far, even though we're only mid-year. One of the better ones in my opinion, but also one that will probably ride under the shadow of bigger records such as Planet Mental (let's be honest!) has GOT to be Lights Out's "Overload". I loved every second of their debut CD even though it slammed of generic riffs and some redundancy.
They more than made up for that with "Overload". It's still Lights Out, but it's like a completely new band at the same time. They still have the trademark Youngblood sound which is clearly different than the Lockin Out style as far as I'm concerned. They did do away with a lot of their former youth crew elements and concentrated on creating a sound that is more raw, vibrant and mature at the same time. There's a lot of floating distortion, echo on main vocals, loose and wide solos. These elements are glued together with some of the best pissed off vox out there.
I really get a good buzz listening to this band and especially to this new record. You can tell each and every member of this band has hardcore branded on their heart. The best part is that they're still young so there's room for improvement before they really stick to a sound. You gotta love the cover art as well. I recommend this record to everyone, don't pass up on it.
